MNN, with a grant from the Ford Foundation, began a broadcast quality media sharing project called Nymapexchange several months ago. NYMAP (National Youth Media Access Project) is an innovative partnership among public access centers from across the country committed to expanding services to young people. Initiated by the MNN Youth Channel, NYMAP seeks to nurture the right of free speech, to strengthen the much-needed presence of alternative and youth voices, and to connect young mediamakers from diverse backgrounds.
Although there are many aspects to this project one of the most crucial aspects is transfering large files from one access center to the next on a shoestring budget. These files are broadcast quality video files. Several of the access centers participating are connected to the internet via limited download/upload connections usually funneled through school or city governments. These access centers rarely have an IT department to help them with upload/download problems. We have tried other applications such as Azureus and bit torrent but found numerous problems raning from creating the torrent files to getting around the firewalls positioned in these environments.
Pando has helped immensely in our project. Pando has virtually eliminated all our transfer issues allowing our participants to focus on the other aspects of video compression/decompression and playback (Very important pieces).
The NYMAPExchange website is a central place where participants can post what content is available along with short descriptions of it. The website, built in Drupal, allows the participants to sort by genre, audience, bit rates and get information on copyright, licenses, etc. The site also produces an RSS feeds in which the participants can subscribe to with Pando to automatically download videos when they are posted!
If you're interested in our project and assisting in any way (or just talking about it). Feel free to contact us at anytime!
workflow for youth video
workflow for youth video exchange network
hi all,
this is andrew. i am coordinating the youth video exchange netowork, a project of the National Youth Media Access Project - online at www.nymapexchange.net
heres a super quick rundown of our workflow:
drupal site is used for member info intake, communication among partner groups, distributing instructional information, and posting information about videos (video entries). [SOON, the site will feature a flv preview of pieces as well as a hardlink which will last beyond the 'pando expiration period.'
-member joins network by filling out an online forma nd being approved
-member creates and account and profile on the site
-member is granted privileges to create content, such as newsblog posts and/or video entries.
-member is added to the private mailing list (this may soon be updated to use drupal 'groups' function)
-member compresses video according to online specs (hi-quality - about 350 MB/28 min.)
-member drops file (usu. mp4) into pando and sends to the mailing list
-user posts video entry (description, file info, tags, genre, site of origin, AND a link to the pando file generated by Pando)
-all members on the listserve receive the file and open it in pando and voila!!
it's not perfect. now new members need to be 'caught up' by receiving all the past pando files as a .zip package from the administrator (me). eventually, that will be fixed because we hope to pull all the files down to a server here at MNN automatically and create an archive that people can do straight downloads from later.
other note: the hard link that people post now is actually not yet displayed. eventually it will be -- but only to logged in members.
we are not trying to distribute freely to the public. this is a purposed network.
hope that all makes sense. hit me at andrew AT-NOSPAM youthchannel.org with yer questions and comments.

That's a really great writeup, Andrew! I'm a big fan of community access video, and I'm glad that Pando can help out!
